When it comes to premium window coverings, plantation shutters and blinds represent two distinct approaches. Shutters are a long-term investment that becomes part of your home’s architecture. Blinds are a flexible, cost-effective solution with a wide range of styles. Both have their place in a Queensland home — here’s how to decide.

What Are Plantation Shutters?

Plantation shutters are solid panels with adjustable louvres that are fixed to the window frame. Unlike blinds that hang from a rail or headbox, shutters are a permanent fixture — they open and close like small doors, with the louvres tilting to control light and airflow.

At Think Blinds, our shutters are manufactured by Norman Blinds, who are exclusive developers of ABS shutter technology. This is an important distinction: our shutters use an ABS finish, not PVC. ABS is lighter and stronger than PVC, and it holds its colour and shape better over time — particularly relevant in Queensland where heat and UV exposure can degrade cheaper materials.

Our indoor shutters are suitable for living areas, bedrooms, and even wet areas like bathrooms, which is where many shutter products fail.

How Do Blinds Compare?

The term “blinds” covers a wide range of products — roller blinds, venetians, romans, honeycomb shades, and more. Each type has different strengths, but as a category, blinds offer more variety in style, fabric, and price point than shutters.

Blinds are also faster to manufacture and install. Custom-made roller blinds, venetians, verticals, and panel glides typically take around 3 weeks for delivery, compared to approximately 6 weeks for shutters.

Room-by-Room Recommendations

Living Rooms and Bedrooms

Shutters are a strong choice here if budget allows. They add a premium, architectural feel and are exceptionally durable for high-traffic rooms. For bedrooms where complete darkness is essential, blockout roller blinds may actually outperform shutters, as minor light gaps can occur between louvres.

Bathrooms and Laundries

Both work well. Our ABS shutters are rated for wet areas, and aluminium venetians are fully moisture-resistant. Venetians are the more budget-friendly option for these rooms.

Kitchens

Aluminium venetians or roller blinds tend to win here. They’re easier to clean around cooking splashes and grease, while shutters in a kitchen — though attractive — require more careful maintenance.

Children’s Rooms

Shutters have no cords or chains by design, making them inherently child-safe. For blinds, our vertical blinds and panel glides feature wand control with sewn-in bottom-weights — no chains or cords — providing equivalent safety.

Cost and Value

Shutters are a higher upfront investment than most blind types. However, they typically last significantly longer and can add value when selling your home — real estate agents often list plantation shutters as a feature in property listings.

Blinds offer more flexibility if you’re working to a tighter budget or want to cover many windows at once. You can also mix and match — shutters on the front-facing windows for street appeal, and blinds in bedrooms and utility rooms for practicality.

All our products require a 40% deposit, with the balance due on or before installation day. We’re also finalising interest-free finance options — contact us for the latest information.

Can You Mix Shutters and Blinds?

Absolutely — and many of our customers do. A common approach in Bundaberg homes is:

  • Plantation shutters on street-facing windows and living areas
  • Roller blinds in bedrooms
  • Aluminium venetians in bathrooms and kitchens
  • Outdoor blinds or outdoor shutters on the patio

This combination gives you the best of both worlds and lets you allocate your budget where it has the most impact.
